Career Goals
Write Them Down
Goals are just dreams until you write them down. Then they become promises to yourself. You need to make a plan in order to achieve your goals.
“We have a process called ‘going through the chairs,’” says NDT industry veteran Jim Treat of Houston-based Longview Inspection, Inc. “We sit down with our people and plot out a 2 –3 year program that includes a training plan and possible options for them within the company. That way both of us know the commitment is there up front.”
Treat also notes that it’s important for your personal goals to coincide with the goals of the company, whether in your current job or in a prospective position.
Your plan will become the road map to your personal career path, balancing your personal and professional goals, prioritizing what’s most important to you now and in the future. Be specific in what you want to achieve, whether it is a financial goal or one that will bring you personal satisfaction.
Finally, put your plan in writing. This document will help guide you to a more focused job search.
